Photo?Responsive Water Filtration Membranes Based on Polymerizable Columnar Liquid Crystals with Azo Moieties

New materials developed in the last years promise to contribute significantly preparation of membranes with improved performance water filtration. Specifically, use dynamic-responsive systems provides reversibility membrane properties. In this work, a reversible photo-switchable based on templated liquid crystals is presented. Crosslinking columnar network, formed by self-assembly discotic supramolecular complex photo-responsive moiety, results switchable filtration membrane. The azo groups undergo photoinduced trans-cis isomerization irradiation 365 nm light and relax back cis isomer lifetime 5.7 h or within few minutes at 455 nm. have light-induced change permeability molecular weight cut off poly (ethylene glycol). effective pore size trans (1.2 nm) increases 1.4 for isomer. Rejection organic dye Rhodamine B reversibly switched between 50 85% alternating specific switching demonstrates potential system light-controlled separation nanoporous membranes.
